If you’re planning to travel within the United States after May 7, 2025, you need to be aware of major changes to airport ID requirements. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has begun enforcing new identity verification standards at security checkpoints. In short: if your ID isn’t REAL ID-compliant or federally approved, you may be denied boarding—even for a domestic flight.

This change is part of a long-delayed security measure introduced under the REAL ID Act, which now affects millions of travelers—especially those still using standard driver’s licenses.

When planning a trip abroad, be sure to take care of a travel insurance policy that will protect you from unforeseen situations during the trip and compensate for unplanned expenses - for medical treatment, in case of lost luggage, flight cancellation, etc.

What Is REAL ID?

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act was created in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. Its goal is to enhance national security by setting federal standards for state-issued IDs and reducing fraud.

REAL ID cards are marked with a gold or black star in the top corner and are now required for:

- Boarding domestic flights.

- Entering federal facilities

- Accessing military bases and nuclear sites.

What Happens If You Don’t Have a REAL ID?

If your ID doesn’t meet REAL ID standards, TSA will require a different federally approved document – such as a valid U.S. passport, military ID, or green card – for domestic travel. Without one, you could be denied boarding, even for short flights within the U.S.

How to Get a REAL ID: A Step-by-Step Guide

To apply for a REAL ID, you must visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office in person. You’ll need the following:

- Proof of full legal name and date of birth (e.g., birth certificate or passport)

- Social Security number (SSN card or recent tax document)

- Proof of lawful presence in the U.S. (e.g., visa or green card)

- Two documents showing residency in your state (e.g., utility bill, lease, bank statement)

How to Check If You Already Have a REAL ID?

If you’ve recently renewed your license, check for a gold or black star in the upper right corner of your ID. If you see it, your card is already REAL ID-compliant.

Do foreign travelers need a REAL ID?

If you are a foreigner temporarily staying in the United States, the REAL ID requirements do not apply to you. Good news: you don't need REAL ID for domestic flights.

You can continue to use a valid passport of your country, provided that its validity has not expired. This is enough to pass TSA screening when flying within the US. The rule concerns:

- Tourists with a B1/B2 visa.

- Students with F-1 or J-1 visas.

- Temporary workers with H-1B, L-1, O-1 visas.

- Business travelers from abroad.

Obtaining a US driver's license or REAL ID is not required if you are not a US resident. However, despite the fact that a passport is usually sufficient for domestic travel, it is recommended to have an American visa and accompanying immigration documents with you, especially when traveling long distances or through major airports.

In rare cases, TSA or immigration officers may request additional documents to confirm your status:

- Form I-20 (for students with an F-1 visa).

- Form DS-2019 (for J-1 visa exchange program participants).

- Notice I-797 (confirmation of immigration status, for H-1B, O-1 and other visas).

Such cases do not happen often, but it is better to be ready to avoid delays and additional inspection.

Starting May 7, 2025, new ID rules are in effect for flying within the U.S. U.S. citizens now need a REAL ID or a federally approved alternative. However, foreign nationals can continue traveling domestically with a valid passport.
