What is a Working Holiday Visa to Austria?
This is a special long-term visa of type D, which allows foreigners from certain countries to live, work and travel in Austria for one year. Participants in the program can officially get a short-term or seasonal job, attend language or other short-term courses, and travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days during the validity of the visa.
Important! This visa is not renewable and can only be issued once in a lifetime.
Who can apply?
Only citizens of countries with which Austria has concluded relevant bilateral agreements can participate in the program. As of 2025, the following can apply:
- Australians - for a period of up to 12 months.
- Canadians - up to 12 months, the applicant's age is up to 35 years.
- New Zealand citizens - up to 6 months.
- Citizens of the USA, Japan, Argentina, Chile, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong - up to 12 months.
The applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 30, with the exception of Canadian citizens who are allowed to apply up to and including 35 years. The program is primarily designed for students, graduates, young professionals or those taking a career break.

- Work: temporary or seasonal work, particularly in the hospitality, tourism, hospitality or retail sectors.
- Study: short-term educational programmes, such as German language courses.
- Travel: explore Austria or travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days.
What documents are required for an Austrian work and holiday visa?
To apply for a working holiday visa to Austria, you need to prepare:
- A valid passport valid for the entire period of stay + at least 3 more month.
- Documentary proof of financial capacity (bank statements or a letter from a sponsor).
- Health and travel insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros
- A completed D visa application form.
- One biometric passport-sized photo (not older than 6 months).
- Educational documents (e.g. diploma or university transcript – depending on your country of citizenship).
- Criminal record certificate (required for some citizens)
