Thailand has made financial proof mandatory for tourist visas in 2025

Now all applicants for a tourist visa must prove that they have sufficient funds to stay in Thailand.

The minimum amount is 20,000 Thai baht (approximately 550 USD or 510 EUR).

Proof can be provided in several ways:

- Bank statement for the last three months

- Letter of support from the sponsor, if the trip is financed by another person

This requirement applies to all applicants, regardless of country of origin, and is mandatory for obtaining a tourist visa, including citizens of Tajikistan, Ghana, Moldova and Turkmenistan.

What documents are required to obtain a Thai tourist visa in 2025?

The standard package of documents for obtaining a tourist visa to Thailand in 2025 includes the following certificates:

- Valid passport with a validity of at least 6 months from the date of application

- Recent passport-sized photo

- Round-trip ticket (confirmation of air travel booking in both directions)

- Documents of residence in Thailand (hotel reservation or confirmation from the host)

- Financial evidence (minimum 20,000 Thai baht in the account or sponsorship letter).

These documents are required to obtain a single-entry tourist visa, which typically allows a stay of up to 60 days.

Do the changes apply to travelers entering on a visa-on-arrival?

While the reinstated financial proof requirement officially only applies to tourist visa applications, travelers arriving on a visa-on-arrival (VoA) program should be aware that Thai immigration officials may request proof of sufficient funds at the point of entry.

Although this practice is not always followed, officials have the right to request the appropriate documents, and failure to do so may result in denial of entry.

Requirements for a visa-on-arrival to Thailand

- A valid passport with a minimum validity of 30 days.

- A completed visa-on-arrival (VoA) application form.

- A passport-sized photo.

- Proof of residence in Thailand.

- Confirmed return or onward ticket

- Proof of sufficient funds for the trip: minimum 10,000 Thai baht per person or 20,000 Thai baht per family

What else has changed for tourists in Thailand?

- Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

From May 1, 2025, all foreign tourists must complete the TDAC electronic form at least three days before arrival. It replaces the paper TM6 form and is mandatory for everyone, regardless of visa status.

- Possible reduction in visa-free stay

Currently, citizens of 93 countries can stay in Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days. However, this policy is being reviewed and it is likely that the visa-free stay period may be reduced to 30 days due to concerns about visa abuse.

Recommendations for travelers planning a trip to Thailand in 2025

- Plan ahead and make sure you have all the necessary documents, including financial proof, before applying for a visa.

- Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) at least three days before your arrival to avoid delays at the border.
